Fremantle Mayor, Peter Tagliaferri has joined the war on waste; throwing his support behind the new program Adopt-a-Spot.
The program, facilitated by Keep Australia Beautiful Council WA (KABC WA), encourages community groups, businesses, and individuals to take environmental responsibility by “adopting” a small part of their local area, keeping it litter free.
Mayor Tagliaferri said Fremantle experiences plenty of tourists and visitors entering the Port City, and leaving them with a great first impression was something the community deserved.
“Fremantle litter free shows our guests that our community cares deeply enough about their City’s image, and will take action to preserve that image.”
Adopting individuals and groups are provided with all the tools to ensure victory in the battle against litter: gloves, litter bags, tongs, signage, and safety information.
The City of Fremantle is encouraging more local residents and businesses to join Samson Primary School and Bunnings on the litter free frontline.
City of Fremantle Bush Regenerator/City of Fremantle Adopt-a-Spot Coordinator, Shayne Boyle said that most Fremantle residents are environmentally conscious, but didn’t know where to begin.
“Environmental responsibility is like a jigsaw puzzle; keeping just one road or park litter free may seem small and insignificant, but combine that with another group keeping clean another park and another road - soon all the pieces make up a picture of a clean city.”
Adopters agree to look after a site for two years, and KABC WA provides an adoption certificate, volunteer insurance, safety information and recognition on the Keep Australia Beautiful website honour call.
